Fremont's Diwali Season Starts Two Weeks Before Diwali

If Diwali falls on Sunday, November 8 this year, why is Fremont's biggest public Diwali celebration on Saturday, October 24?

Both dates are correct. Drik Panchang's location-specific calendar for Fremont puts Lakshmi Puja on Sunday, November 8, 2026, with a puja muhurat of 5:23 to 7:14 p.m. The FOG Diwali Mela 2026 is on October 24 at Washington High School. The fifteen days between them hold most of Fremont's Diwali calendar, and the events come in a set order. First the public festival, then the civic recognition, then the five days of observance at the temples. If you plan around November 8 alone, you'll catch only the last stretch.

The festival comes first

The mela runs Saturday, October 24, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Washington High School, 38442 Fremont Blvd. The ticket listing names two hosts, Festival of Globe Silicon Valley and Fremont Hindu Temple, and bills it as a full day of festivities, entertainment, shopping and food.

The program has more on it than most neighborhood Diwali gatherings:

  • A Ramayana laser show and a Ramleela enactment
  • Open Garba and Dandiya dancing for all ages
  • A traditional Lakshmi Pooja and a Deepotsava celebration
  • Open contests in dance, Rangoli design, drawing and diya painting

The two official pages describe admission differently. The organizer's event page says "Free Parking & Free Registration." The EventMozo ticket listing, which that same page links to, says "$5 Entry | Free Parking." Both pages agree on free parking. For entry, check the ticket page closer to the day, and plan on the $5 until the organizer says otherwise.

The weekend has a lead-in at the Downtown Event Center and Plaza. On Friday, October 23, from 5 to 9 p.m., the City of Fremont and the Fremont Chamber of Commerce hold their Trick-or-Treat Event at 3500 Capitol Ave. The city's page says presale trick-or-treat tickets are already sold out. Fremont Street Eats, which runs Friday evenings from 5 to 9 p.m. at the same plaza, has its season scheduled through October. A family could do the plaza on Friday night and the mela on Saturday without leaving the city.

Then City Hall raises the flag

Twelve days after the mela, the observance moves to City Hall. The City of Fremont's ceremonial flag schedule lists a Diwali flag raising for Thursday, November 5, 2026, at noon. City Hall is at 3300 Capitol Ave.

The timing works in sequence. The flag goes up on a weekday at noon, the day before the five-day festival starts by the temple calendar. It's the only Diwali date on this list set by the city government, and it falls between the community festival and the religious observances.

The five days, in temple order

Most of the confusion about "when Diwali is" comes from this stretch. The Sri Siddhi Vinayaka Cultural Center, known as SVCC Temple, at 40155 Blacow Rd., posts the sequence on its Fremont page, and Drik Panchang fills in the last day.

  1. Friday, November 6: Dhanteras, or Dhantrayodashi. It's first on the temple's list of the festival days.
  2. Saturday, November 7: Narak Chathurdasi. SVCC states plainly that there is no event at the temple that day.
  3. Sunday, November 8: Deepavali, or Diwali. The temple is open 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Mahalakshmi Abhishekam is at 6 p.m. and Sahasranama Kumkumarchana at 7 p.m., followed by archana, mantra pushpam, Maha Mangala Aarthi and prasadam. The notice image also says there will be no Ganesha Abhishekam that evening.
  4. Monday, November 9: Govardhan Puja and Annakut. That's the date on Drik Panchang's Fremont calendar. It's a calendar date, not a schedule from any particular temple.

The 6 p.m. start at SVCC falls inside the 5:23 to 7:14 p.m. muhurat window that Drik Panchang lists for Fremont on November 8. On a Sunday evening that also means Blacow Road traffic will be heaviest in that same window.

Two calendars that haven't filled in yet

As of early October, two of Fremont's best-known houses of worship haven't posted their Diwali-season programs.

Fremont Hindu Temple, run by Vedic Dharma Samaj at 3676 Delaware Drive, co-hosts the October 24 mela. Its own online events calendar currently ends with entries dated October 28 and doesn't yet show a Lakshmi Puja, Govardhan Puja or Annakut program.

Gurdwara Sahib Fremont is at 300 Gurdwara Road. Bandi Chhor Divas is celebrated together with Diwali, as an Alameda County Library explainer notes. The gurdwara's public events page lists no upcoming events, though, and its November 2026 view returns no results. The most recent past entries there are from 2024, so the online calendar may not reflect current plans.

An empty calendar in early October doesn't mean nothing will happen. It means nobody has published a date yet. The safest move is to contact either place directly rather than rely on a date from another site or from an earlier year. The same caution applies to the library: the county's Diwali page with Fremont Main Library activities describes the 2025 holiday, not this year's.

Where the rest of Fremont's calendar lands

The Diwali stretch overlaps with the start of the holiday season in Niles and near Lake Elizabeth. Several of these dates fall within a day or two of the Diwali dates above:

Date Event Location Detail
Wed, Nov 4 "The Big Lebowski" Movie Night Essanay Silent Film Museum, 37417 Niles Blvd. Doors 6 p.m., film 7 p.m.
Sat, Nov 7 Holiday Season Kick Off Sale Niles Main Street Association, 37573 Niles Blvd. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., details still to come
Fri, Nov 13 Age Well Center at Lake Elizabeth Artisan Night Market, Holiday Edition 40086 Paseo Padre Pkwy. 4 to 9 p.m., free

The Essanay movie night is the evening before the City Hall flag raising. The Niles Holiday Season Kick Off Sale falls on Saturday, November 7, the one festival day with no event at SVCC, so the Niles Boulevard shops and a quiet temple day line up. Five days after Diwali, the Artisan Night Market at the Age Well Center brings local handmade goods, art, jewelry, treats, music and hot chocolate to Paseo Padre Parkway.

Before then, Niles has its own October date. Niles Concerts on the Plaza holds its "Beatles Day" on Saturday, October 10, noon to 6 p.m., at Niles Town Plaza, 37592 Niles Blvd. An earlier city newsletter listed different hours, so the Niles Main Street Association event page is the one to check.

Put together, Fremont has published Diwali dates on October 24, November 5, November 6, November 8 and November 9. Each one comes from the organizer's own page, and two major venues still have no 2026 schedule posted.

Some Fremont families are also weighing a home sale or purchase around these holiday weeks, when relatives are in town and decisions often involve more than one generation.
